The ancient Greek philosopher, Pythagoras, suggested that the meaning behind numbers was deeply significant. The number three was considered as the perfect number, the number of harmony, wisdom and understanding. It was also the number of time – past, present, future; birth, life, death; beginning, middle, end – it was the number of the divine. I have also read that the 'rule of threes' is based on the principle that things that come in threes are inherently more satisfying and effective. So... pictured sitting atop a prickly pear cactus pad (nopal) are three cactus flower friends enjoying each other's company and putting on a show! Perfect!!

Have you ever seen something, have it stay on your mind and then you keep returning back to it? This sounds crazy but... that is how I felt about this flower when I looked at a photograph while doing detail research. I am still amazed at the beauty of cactus and its flower.
It was love at first sight.
I found that it is an Echinopsis Terscheckii also known as the Cardon Grande. Sometimes called the Argentine saguaro. It has huge flowers measuring up to 8" across. They open after dark, are extremely fragrant and stay open until late morning. Immediately my thoughts were about its fleeting beauty and how sad the flower didn't last longer.
This prompted me to paint its portrait and write a poem about it.

Only For One Night
by Nancy Palmisano
In the darkness of the night
I see a vision enticing me
Moonlight shining on your face.
You dance so free in the gentle breeze
I want to gaze at you forever
Maybe, if only for one night.
Your scent is so alluring
There's no question of your beauty
I am drawn to all you are.
Holding breath, my heart beats faster
I dare not turn my eyes off you
Even only for one night.
Sunrise brightens up the morning
A heavy sigh that you're still here
Cherishing you stayed a while.
Yet, I know time gives no favors
For by midday you are gone
It was only for one night.

It's hard not to smile when you see a sunflower. They are such a happy flower. I can remember growing them when I was a young girl. In this painting you can feel the warmth of the light shining on the tall sunflower petals and stem. In general, as they grow, they have a tendency to face the sun. Their yellow color symbolizes vitality, intelligence, happiness and also traditionally symbolizes friendship. Sunflowers are also associated with spiritual knowledge and the desire to seek truth and light. This sunflower is standing in the light.
