Sun Goddess

This is a trichocereus grandiflora 'Sun Goddess'. It seems illogical to have that name because this cereus flower is a night bloomer. I bought it when it was about 6" high. Soon it had plenty of pups around it and it took three years before it bloomed... but this girl knows how to put on a show! The flowers are about 6-8 inches diameter and the scent was heavenly! I was happy the next morning was cloudy so the flower got to stay a little longer. This was my first bloom in May. It flowered again in July but wilted so fast in the hot morning sun. This cactus is going to get planted it in the ground and I read it gets numerous blooms as it matures. It is just a shame the flowers only last one day.

The Hibiscus flowers are showy and their petals are often quite ruffled. Tropical hibiscus flowers typically grow about 4-6 inches
across and there are more than a hundred species found in various shades of color. My hibiscus painting is dressed in red.
TIFFANY IN PINK
16" x 12" x 1.75"
Original Oil Painting is SOLD
Just about everyone is familiar with the Tiffany name. It conjures up visions of jewelry in that pretty robin egg blue box. Yet, years ago, when I was searching for a fragrant rose, I came across the classic Tiffany Hybrid Tea rose. First enticed by the name, this rose does not disappoint and is very fragrant. This flower has pure pink petals with a hint of warm, golden yellow radiating from the heart of the rose.
And as we all know, the colors of roses have meanings. Pink represents love, gratitude and appreciation. Yellow in a rose symbolizes joy, gladness and friendship. This Tiffany Rose blends those meanings together into one flower... and this is Tiffany comes in pink.

One morning, years ago, I was running errands on limited time. The first stop was Home Depot. I love to go through the garden entry. My quick pace came to a complete stop. There in front of me was this gorgeous, about 7" wide, white night blooming cereus flower that was starting to droop in the morning light. I quickly took pictures of it before it faded completely. I wanted this 3 ft. cactus and made a mental note that I would buy it on the way out. After a few issues inside the store, I left quickly out the main door. So much for making that mental note! I completed the rest of my errands and did not remember the cereus cactus until I saw my phone's gallery a few days later. And we all know that it was gone when I went back. At least I had the photos to remind me of that breathtaking flower. Well, life happens and family first... so even though I started this painting about 5 months ago, I think it was worth the wait!
Have you ever seen something, have it stay on your mind and then you keep returning back to it? This sounds crazy but... that is how I felt about this flower when I looked at a photograph while doing detail research. I am still amazed at the beauty of cactus and its flower.
It was love at first sight.
I found that it is an Echinopsis Terscheckii also known as the Cardon Grande. Sometimes called the Argentine saguaro. It has huge flowers measuring up to 8" across. They open after dark, are extremely fragrant and stay open until late morning. Immediately my thoughts were about its fleeting beauty and how sad the flower didn't last longer.
This prompted me to paint its portrait and write a poem about it.

Only For One Night
by Nancy Palmisano
In the darkness of the night
I see a vision enticing me
Moonlight shining on your face.
You dance so free in the gentle breeze
I want to gaze at you forever
Maybe, if only for one night.
Your scent is so alluring
There's no question of your beauty
I am drawn to all you are.
Holding breath, my heart beats faster
I dare not turn my eyes off you
Even only for one night.
Sunrise brightens up the morning
A heavy sigh that you're still here
Cherishing you stayed a while.
Yet, I know time gives no favors
For by midday you are gone
It was only for one night.

Fully dressed, with petals extending wide open, the prickly pear flower is perched on a pedestal and moves into center stage... it is PRIME TIME. The pollinating bees buzz and dance around the flowers like there's a celebration going on. And rightly so, since the blossoms only last a day before they begin to close. When the flower falls off, what remains is the pedestal, which is called the fruit.

When the seasons change and the weather gets warmer, I look forward to seeing new growth starting in my garden. I anticipate the 'big show' of my prickly pear cactus. All the buds are forming on the pads. They're tightly closed basking in the sun... just waiting to burst open. Soon I'll see the petal color starting to emerge and unfold... in NEW BEGINNINGS.

It's hard not to smile when you see a sunflower. They are such a happy flower. I can remember growing them when I was a young girl. In this painting you can feel the warmth of the light shining on the tall sunflower petals and stem. In general, as they grow, they have a tendency to face the sun. Their yellow color symbolizes vitality, intelligence, happiness and also traditionally symbolizes friendship. Sunflowers are also associated with spiritual knowledge and the desire to seek truth and light. This sunflower is standing in the light.

Prickly pear cactus are abundant in Arizona. The pads and flowers come in a variety of colors. The flat pads look like large thick leaves and have clusters of fine spines that protect the plant. I love this one in my garden because of its bright orange color. When I see the cactus pads full of buds, the anticipation begins... waiting and watching for them to open and display their beauty. The great thing is that they don't open all at once, which makes it a long blooming delightful show! When the sunlight shines on them, the petals glow with illuminating color. This is where my love begins!

My husband and I went to Hawaii on our honeymoon and I immediately fell in love with all the tropical flowers. My favorite was the bird of paradise and I figured I would plant one in my garden when I got back home. Sadly, I found out they do not grow in Buffalo, NY. It wasn't until we moved to Arizona in 1998 when I saw the bird of paradise growing in the yard of a house we were viewing. We didn't buy this house but now I knew I could plant my own. After purchasing our home, I soon made it to the nursery and bought two bird of paradise (sterlitzia) plants. Now I get plenty of my own blooms which makes me feel like it's almost paradise.

A few years ago, I purchased a small package of sunflower seeds. I planted the seeds and this beautiful flower grew. It must have been a different variation of sunflower because it didn't look like a regular tall plant I was used to. The flower was short, maybe less than 12" high with an interesting center and had huge leaves. I took photos of this plant so I could remember it. I loved the soft delicate petals with the curls, twists and turns they made. This flower is truely bright and beautiful.

One of my favorite places in Arizona to go and explore is the Phoenix Botanical Gardens. They have so many garden trails loaded with desert vegetation and other unique plants. It is home to thousands of species of cactus, trees and flowers from all around the world. One bright sunny day at PBG, I photographed this orange rose. The sun shining on the petals made it look like it was glowing. I took a photograph so I could save the image. When looking thru my photo box, I thought it would be great to paint and try to catch that glow. This is one of my favorite roses that I love.

After weeks of updating our masterbath, it came time for the finishing touches and I needed something for the wall near my vanity. I wanted a water scene and these swans with their elongated, curved necks and white feathers stood out. My masterbath was done in neutrals, grays and taupes and I didn't want blue water. A good friend, who is also an artist, suggested I paint the whole work in neutrals... even the water. I wasn't sure how I'd like that but as I started, I immediately knew it was the right direction. In the research of painting these swans, I've learned that swans have been counted among the few animal species that form lifelong pair bondsmate for life... so I named it always and forever.

You may have noticed, this is a different angle of the same sunflower titled Bright and Beautiful. Years ago, I purchased a small package of sunflower seeds. I planted them and this beautiful flower grew. It must have been a different variation of sunflower because it didn't look like a regular tall plant I was used to. The flower was short, maybe less than 12" high with an interesting center and had huge leaves. I loved the soft delicate petals with the curls, twists and turns. I took several photos of this plant. This one looked like its face was turned and was starring at the sun... so I used this one for my first oil painting.
