The petals are whimsically shaped and decorated with ruffled edges that begin to twist and turn as it evolves creating a character of its own. Exposed to the sun overtime, it opens so wide it almost flattens out revealing their stamens and brilliant colors that look like painted brush strokes.
Each bloom is a work of art --- capturing the attention of its audience.

Just about everyone is familiar with the Tiffany name.
It conjures up visions of jewelry in that pretty robin egg blue box.
Yet years ago, when I was searching for a fragrant rose, I came across the classic Tiffany Hybrid Tea rose. First enticed by the name, this rose does not disappoint and is very fragrant. This flower has pure pink petals with a hint of warm, golden yellow radiating from the heart of the rose.
And as we all know, the colors of roses have many meanings.
Pink roses represents love, gratitude and appreciation.
Yellow in a rose symbolizes joy, gladness and friendship.
This Tiffany Rose blends those meanings together in one flower...
and this Tiffany comes in pink.

My daughter has some beautiful rose bushes in her garden... and they're here in Arizona! There are two reds, a white with pink edges... and white with light yellow centers. There's something wonderful about the rose. It has cultural traditions dating way back to ancient times as well as religious significance. Roses have inspired great writers in literature, in music, and the language of flowers in floral arrangements.
Depending on the color, rose are given many meanings... white = innocence, purity

When I was a young girl with a vivid imagination, white roses reminded me of angels. And sitting next to the white rose bushes, I felt like I was in the Company of Angels.

The bird of paradise is one of my favorite flowers and one of my favorites to paint. When my garden bird of paradise are ready to bloom I often think about Hawaii. It is where I fell in love with this flower. It brings back fond memories and my husband and I  vowed we would go back again. That's a 'tropical promise' I hope we keep.

Have you ever seen something, have it stay on your mind and then you keep returning back to it? This sounds crazy but... that is how I felt about this flower when I looked at a photograph while doing detail research. I am still amazed at the beauty of cactus and its flower.

It was love at first sight.

I found that it is an Echinopsis Terscheckii also known as the Cardon Grande. Sometimes called the Argentine saguaro. It has huge flowers measuring up to 8" across. They open after dark, are extremely fragrant and stay open until the next afternoon. Immediately my thoughts were about its fleeting beauty and how sad the flower didn't last longer.

This prompted me to paint its portrait and write a poem about it.

Only For One Night

by Nancy Palmisano

In the darkness of the night
I see a vision enticing me
Moonlight shining on your face.
You dance so free in the gentle breeze
I want to gaze at you forever
Maybe, if only for one night.

Your scent is so alluring

There's no question of your beauty
I am drawn to all you are.
Holding breath, my heart beats faster
I dare not turn my eyes off you
Even only for one night.

Sunrise brightens up the morning
A heavy sigh that you're still here
Cherishing you stayed a while.
Yet, I know time gives no favors
For by midday you are gone
It was only for one night.

When the seasons change and the weather gets warmer, I look forward to seeing new growth starting in my garden. I anticipate the 'big show' of my prickly pear cactus. All the buds are forming on the pads. They're tightly closed basking in the sun... just waiting to burst open. Soon I'll see the petal color starting to emerge and unfold... in NEW BEGINNINGS.

Fully dressed, with petals extending wide open, the prickly pear flower is perched on a pedestal and moves into center stage... it is PRIME TIME. The pollinating bees buzz and dance around the flowers like there's a celebration going on. And rightly so, since the blossoms only last a day before they begin to close. When the flower falls off, what remains is the pedestal, which is called the fruit.

The flowers may be gone but it is not the end. What remains is the 'fruit' that held the flowers up. It will change color as it matures. Each fruit is filled with pulp and SEEDS OF REBIRTH. They are an edible delight for birds, squirrels, jackrabbits, and other desert dwellers as well as humans. The seeds will be dropped and new growth will begin, repeating the rebirth of the prickly pear cactus.

Autumn is my favorite season. I love fall colors. But in the desert of Arizona, it's not as abundant as back east in Buffalo, NY where I grew up.
So, when visiting my daughter in Chicago during peak fall season, I took the opportunity to select perfect leaves and pinecones. I arranged them carefully on her outdoor woven ottoman and captured The Fall Collection.

I found plenty of photographs of Niagara Falls in my photo box. I am originally from western NY state. Born in Buffalo, got married, and lived on Grand Island. It's a pork chop shaped island in the middle of the Niagara River. We lived on the sixth 5-acre lot from the river edge. We'd often take a walk down to the river and we could see the mist of Niagara Falls in the distance. And Canada was what appeared to be a stone's throw across the river. It is a beautiful area. I miss its three seasons, spring, summer and fall... but disliked the long, cold snowy winters. There are plenty of family and friends there so I know we'll go back and visit again.

It's hard not to smile when you see a sunflower. They are such a happy flower. I can remember growing them when I was a young girl. In this painting you can feel the warmth of the light shining on the tall sunflower petals and stem. In general, as they grow, they have a tendency to face the sun. Their yellow color symbolizes vitality, intelligence, happiness and also traditionally symbolizes friendship. Sunflowers are also associated with spiritual knowledge and the desire to seek truth and light. This sunflower is standing in the light.

In Aquatic Symphony, you can almost see the graceful melodic dance of the lotus flower and pods swaying in the light fog. It gives a zen-like feel with a turquoise blue background and green leaves that have hints of purple and gold. Back when I made silk floral arrangements, many times I used the dried conical pods to add interest to the floral design. The lotus flower is fragrant and symbolizes beauty, grace, harmony, spiritual knowledge and serenity.

Prickly pear cactus are abundant in Arizona. The pads and flowers come in a variety of colors. The flat pads look like large thick leaves and have clusters of fine spines that protect the plant. I love this one in my garden because of its bright orange color. When I see the cactus pads full of buds, the anticipation begins... waiting and watching for them to open and display their beauty. The great thing is that they don't open all at once, which makes it a long blooming delightful show! When the sunlight shines on them, the petals glow with illuminating color. This is where my love begins!

A few years ago, I purchased a small package of sunflower seeds. I planted the seeds and this beautiful flower grew. It must have been a different variation of sunflower because it didn't look like a regular tall plant I was used to. The flower was short, maybe less than 12" high with an interesting center and had huge leaves. I took photos of this plant so I could remember it. I loved the soft delicate petals with the curls, twists and turns they made. This flower is truely bright and beautiful.

My husband and I went to Hawaii on our honeymoon and I immediately fell in love with all the tropical flowers. My favorite was the bird of paradise and I figured I would plant one in my garden when I got back home. Sadly, I found out they do not grow in Buffalo, NY. It wasn't until we moved to Arizona in 1998 when I saw the bird of paradise growing in the yard of a house we were viewing. We didn't buy this house but now I knew I could plant my own. After purchasing our home, I soon made it to the nursery and bought two bird of paradise (sterlitzia) plants. Now I get plenty of my own blooms which makes me feel like it's almost paradise.

One of my favorite places in Arizona to go and explore is the Phoenix Botanical Gardens. They have so many garden trails loaded with desert vegetation and other unique plants. It is home to thousands of species of cactus, trees and flowers from all around the world. One bright sunny day at PBG, I photographed this orange rose. The sun shining on the petals made it look like it was glowing. I took a photograph so I could save the image. When looking thru my photo box, I thought it would be great to paint and try to catch that glow. This is one of my favorite roses that I love.

After weeks of updating our masterbath, it came time for the finishing touches and I needed something for the wall near my vanity. I wanted a water scene and these swans with their elongated, curved necks and white feathers stood out. My masterbath was done in neutrals, grays and taupes and I didn't want blue water. A good friend, who is also an artist, suggested I paint the whole work in neutrals... even the water. I wasn't sure how I'd like that but as I started, I immediately knew it was the right direction. In the research of painting these swans, I've learned that swans have been counted among the few animal species that form lifelong pair bondsmate for life...  so I named it always and forever.

Every spring, I've gone to Costco and purchased their cut lilies. They have stately long stems and large fragrant  flowers... and most times it's too strong of a scent! But that scent reminds me of springtime and Easter. I photographed these beauties outside and created this painting from individual photos. It is an essence of joy for any season.

You may have noticed, this is a different angle of the same sunflower titled Bright and Beautiful. Years ago, I purchased a small package of sunflower seeds. I planted them and this beautiful flower grew. It must have been a different variation of sunflower because it didn't look like a regular tall plant I was used to. The flower was short, maybe less than 12" high with an interesting center and had huge leaves. I loved the soft delicate petals with the curls, twists and turns. I took several photos of this plant. This one looked like its face was turned and was starring at the sun... so I used this one for my first oil painting.
